History background of the Confederate Battle Flag:
The Confederate flag - specifically the "Southern Cross" battle flag - was designed in 1861 by William Porcher Miles after battlefield confusion involving the first official Confederate flag. It was flown by 11 Southern states during the American Civil War.

The "Southern Cross" was never actually the official national flag of the Confederate States of America. Instead, it was the battle flag used by General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The Confederacy used three official national flags during its existence. This design is the most recognizeable version in recent history.

Today, some Americans still view it as a representation of Southern heritage and history.
